In response to a request from the Institute for Social and Health Sciences in South Africa, International Safe Schools has begun compiling a list  of proven safe and drug-free school programs.   42 listed programs passed a scientifically rigorous review of their research and approaches based on 15 criteria; and were published in the US Department of Education’s Exemplary & Promising Safe, Disciplined and Drug-free Schools Programs 2001 publication.

Please note that programs are separated into 3 groups, the first group is distinguished by also being part of the SECAC 22, a list compiled by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, lead by Dr. Philip Gapinsky.  This list takes all well known research programs from the 1990s and before and rates the top 22 based upon their inclusion in at least 3 scientific reviews of programs.  The third group consists of programs evaluated directly by the International Safe Schools Committee that are not listed in either publication, and found to be in line with the standards of practice of the indicators and matrix of an International Safe School.

Many of the programs listed, especially in the top group are listed in more publications, including the US Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Program’s listing of promising programs for Title V programs for community prevention of youth violence; the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s site of Promising and Exemplary research programs, etc.  We invite you to submit your information via the attached form to Eshmin for inclusion in their resource.  International Safe Schools is also developing a web-based resource for schools to use in selecting programs as they are working on designation as International Safe Schools, under the indicators and benchmarks listed on the website.

Please contact Max Vosskuhler of Peaceful Resources Center or Ellen Schmidt of Children’s Safety Network from the Education Development Center with questions on International Safe Schools.

We would like to acknowledge the work of the team at US Department of Education Office of Safe, Disciplined and Drug-Free Schools.  Lead by Deputy Undersecretary Bill Modzeleski, their tireless efforts ensure that research based programs are made available to schools and communities in the United States. At their annual conference this fall, chaired by Amalia Cuervo, much new research and information will be available.

We thank Dr. Lisa Cohen-Barrios of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School Health for her unwavering support and energetic support of reducing injuries and violence in schools throughout the US and the world.  We thank Stephanie Bryn of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Services Resources Administration for her guidance and input as well.  Yet, most importantly, we thank all of the individuals and groups whose dedication and vision help to reduce the burden of injury throughout the world each day.
